Burden Court

Burden Court is new to Luxury Cotswold Rentals and although we are waiting on new photography we know the house of old and it is as lovely on the inside as it is on the out; and completely renovated not many years ago.

Believed to have been part of the estate belonging to Sir Matthew Hale (1609-76), Lord Chief Justice, Burden Court is an lovely Grade II* listed 17th century Cotswold stone farmhouse that has changed little structurally over the centuries and features original stone fireplaces, mullion windows and oak beams. Of particular note is the massive inglenook fireplace in the family room and the stunning stone fireplace in the main bedroom suite, originally the ‘solar’ for the master of the house.

Situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the historic Monarch’s Way with panoramic views from nearly every room, this stunning cross passage farmhouse was home to the celebrated writer Frances Donaldson, best known for her award-winning biography of King Edward VIII upon which the television series Edward and Mrs Simpson was based. The years she spent at Burden Court with her husband Lord Donaldson from the end of World War II to the 1960s are documented in her enchanting autobiography “A 20th-Century Life” and it was from here she also wrote a much praised biography of her father, the playwright and society bon viveur Frederick Lonsdale.
